A Veneer Dissolves
Visually inspired by Irving Penn’s 1948 Corner Portrait Series, and set against the spirit of 1920s — glamour and nightlife, this story is a contemporary take on the elegance of a socialite. The washroom becomes a space for self-admiration and revelry — a setting where her elegance slightly unravels. Given her character, being photographed in such intimate moments breaks the illusion of respectability that surrounds her kind. In doing so, the image echoes the changing social order of the post war world in the ‘20s, where the culture of nobility lost its hold as the old hierarchies unsettled. The story amplifies the tension between the public and the private.
